Rhythms 2005 : Funds now in motion

It’s been 3 months since Rhythms of One Nation was staged at the Bishops College Auditorium. Over 11 months since the tragic Tsunami hit our paradise-isle. The show was aimed at raising funds for the rebuilding of educational and children’s welfare facilities and we are proud to say that our contribution has materialised, and efforts to utilise the funds are currently underway.

The 6th of August was an evening on Colombo’s entertainment calendar to remember. With a near sell out house, a fantastic assortment of talent and a vibrant array of performances, Rhythms 2005 was, in every sense of the word, an overwhelming success. We wish to make special mention of our guest spot, the superb singing duo Charles Mark who did a superb rendition of their originals. They are featured in the international album ‘Asian Avenue’ by Krishan (from the former ‘Urban Sounds’)
Colombo definitely hopes to see more of them!

We would like to thank all our sponsors, East-West Marketing, Jupiter Trading Co, Taas Agencies, JDC Trading and The Bayleaf and our electronic media sponsors MTV/MBC networks and the Maharaja Group, especially the representatives from Aquarius Event Management Ltd, led by Mr. Fredrick Dissanayake. We also thank Karu Sounds and Nisal of Cool Tempo for the sound and lighting assistance.

We raised over Rs. 500 000 from the evening’s performance. The project of utilising the funds efficiently and effectively is being directly facilitated by the Sarvodaya Organisation together with YTC, the organisers of the event.

YTC would, once again, like to thank the sponsors of this event, the event management officials and the parents, well-wishers and numerous other individuals who helped us along the way.

We hope to make this an annual event, with the next show being bigger and bolder, with the guest appearances by Sri Lankan artistes abroad, and more award winning artistes like Charles Mark, together with the best of Sri Lankan talent.

It’s 5 days to Rhythms and it’s time to let you in on a little more about our performance line up. From music to dance to fashion, the show promises to have you tapping your feet and clicking your fingers with every item.
Among the many dances, will be a fusion of Kandyan, Bharatha Natyam and Kathak, a Western and Bharatha fusion, energetic dances to famous Bollywood tunes, funky grooves to Raghav and Jay Sean material, a Jump ‘n Jive trio and a bouncing Hip Hop crew. Not to forget the ever-popular MJ.
Among the musicians, are star performers like Charles Mark & crew - who’ve won awards at int’l music festivals, an appearance by the upcoming fusion band ‘Paradox’ with their hit percussionist Ravihansa (of the Brass Monkey Band )- winners of Talent Search 2003 , a couple of hits from yesteryear - especially for those in touch with their Retro side, the rock band ‘Tantrum’ with their TNL Hot 10 chart-topping hit ‘Destroyer’, and finally the beautiful harmony of a 4-part choir - winners of the best choir last year.
All this, coupled with a colourful explosion of fashion and more. This Saturday. Rhythms of One Nation. BC Auditorium. 7pm onwards.

Let’s be their light…

By now it’s a well known fact that the worst affected by the vicious tsunami of 26.12.04 were the children of Sri Lanka. Whether it be the North and East, or the South and South East of the island, children everywhere were traumatised. Some orphaned, some abandoned, some homeless, but most deprived of a childhood they deserve to enjoy. Our show attempts to help put their lives back on track through, what we feel, is the most important way – their education. We, together with the Sarvodaya Foundation, will be utilising these funds to rebuild Montessori schools, primary and secondary educational institutions and help provide other educational facilities – from books to buildings – all washed away in the tragic waves of the tsunami. Join us in lighting up their lives…the light of happiness, learning and joy.
